E-cigarettes should be encouraged not stopped

SO now we see tough new EU rules which could see the majority of e cigarettes forced off the market, in a move which could have dramatic consequences.

Recently, a provisional deal between MEPs and national governments could prompt a ban on refillable e cigarettes and force manufacturers to rely on single use low nicotine alternatives.

Under a draft compromise, refillable cartridges would remain legal for now, according to two officials.

But if problems appear in at least three member states, the European Commission, the EU’s executive, could move to ban them!

This could all lead to another ridiculous ban from the EU on the majority of e cigarettes which are better for the health of smokers and for British manufacturers of e cigarettes surely the EU should not be thinking of putting restrictions on a safer alternative to smoking.

While the EU talks about guaranteeing direct subsidies to European tobacco growers from the EU budget, I suspect it also has its eye on the loss of tax revenues to national governments as people switch from tobacco to electronic cigarettes.

If the EU was truly interested in people’s health it would be helping to popularise, rather that restrict, e cigarettes.

A friend of mine was visiting in Spain last month. He was kind enough to bring me 5 cartons of Marlboro regulars from a tax free zone in some spanish islands near african coast. One carton cost only around 22 USD. Lucky spaniards!
Anyway they taste slightly different compared to US marlboros. They’re seem to burn a bit faster than the ones I usually smoke…I have smoked reds from Croatia and they also taste different than the ones here.

Anyone noticed differencies in european cigarettes compared to US ones? #2 (permalink) 03 01 2013, 02 58 PM Craven A Players Senior Member Join Date Jan 2013 Location SF Bay, USA Posts 193 Rep Power 22

Europe is not just one big country, where quality is the same. Cigs from Western Europe can be considered as good quality, though not as good as US made, Eastern European low quality. Note, that some of the low developed European countries are members of EU, so ‘Made in EU’ is not a sign of quality. Russian cigs, from my opinion, are low quality, but as I know better than Ukranian and Polish and Moldovaian. Actually, Russian made are not selling online now, mostly because of changing in customs rules from 2010, according to which any kind of tobacco is prohibitted from sending by post service (excluding express couriers, like UPS, FEDEX etc.) in and out from Russia. Eastern European cigarettes are not fake, low quality is policy of companies, like PM, BAT, JT etc. They keep prices much lower than in West. Europe & USA, but also reduce the quality and this gives them much more profit, than making good quality product with expensive price, because people here can’t afford high prices. Of course, they always say that they keep equal quality all over the world, but it is lies. Main drawbacks of EU cigs FSC, CIS cigs (Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia and some others) low quality tobacco, which is often wet and tasteless, impregnated with chemicals and have unpleasant aftertaste. Also, US made cigarettes for duty free, Europe and other parts of external market are usually worse, than those made for US internal market.

Should be added, that EU cigs have tar/nic limit 10/1, so EU full flavour is not US full flavour.

Good to know S Man! I was wondering what the differences were in quality between geographics. I’ve noticed cigs from Western Europe are more costly than those from Eastern Europe. #7 (permalink) 03 02 2013, 06 05 AM Siberian Man Junior Member Join Date Feb 2013 Location Russian Federation Posts 13 Rep Power 0

You’re right, W/European much more expensive, especially UK made because of taxes and high Pound rate, but from my point of view they’re one of the best, if not the best, among all European made. #8 (permalink) 03 02 2013, 06 22 AM Siberian Man Junior Member Join Date Feb 2013 Location Russian Federation Posts 13 Rep Power 0

One more tip about Euro cigs. Big EU countries with strong economy don’t like to print ‘Made in EU’ on their production, i.e. EU is rather vague term. They prefer speify their own country, for example ‘Made in UK’, ‘Made in France’… Germans like make stress on stereotype about ‘German quality’, so they always print on packs ‘Made in Germany’. You can easily find out exact origin of EU cigarettes by decoding barcode on carton, using websites with such service. #9 (permalink) 03 02 2013, 06 37 AM Craven A Players Senior Member Join Date Jan 2013 Location SF Bay, USA Posts 193 Rep Power 22 Country Codes

I have a buddy from Germany & they are very proud of their abilities!

What site are you referring to? I have a carton of Gitanes & they’re EU made. I would like to know if they’re made in France, because they sure taste like it.

Thanks S Man! Great posting!
