Fox loses it over cvs cigarette ban: americans have a ‘right to buy cigarettes!’ (video)

CVS Pharmacy announced February 5th that the national chain would stop selling cigarettes and all tobacco products by October of 2014. Health organizations like the American Heart Association welcomed the announcement and praised CVS for its decision to be more health conscious than they are profit conscious.

President Obama even released the following statement of support

“I applaud this morning s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead. As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today s decision will help advance my Administration s efforts to reduce tobacco related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come. I congratulate and thank the CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, the board of directors, and all who helped make a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country.”

Queue the manufactured spaz attack by Fox anchors and imagined controversy. Gretchen Carlson asked guests “Is it OK legally to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like this?”

One of her guests responded with “They can’t be promoting health, because&#8230 cigarettes kill. You can’t be promoting health if you’re actually selling cigarettes.” We are so glad there’s at least a tiny flicker of intelligence and honesty on Fox, even if it is from a guest.

Other Fox hosts stood out against the move by CVS with attempts to tie it to Obamacare. On the show “Your World”, Fox host and VP Neil Cavuto said that President Obama supported CVS’ decision, and speculated that CVS was “getting scaredy cat” because “with the health care law and the changes and everything else,” selling tobacco products “didn’t look good.”

A third host, Dana Perino announced she had a thought. One of her co hosts responded “Oh, good.” Dana continued without blinking, trying to connect CVS’s decision to quit selling cigarettes to an opportunity to attack the Affordable Care Act tried to use the decision to attack President Obama’s signature health care law.

“I just wonder,” said Perino “is this President Obama now saying that corporations are allowed to have values and express them? Because if that’s the case, maybe corporations then don’t have to provide contraceptive care to their employees or their health plans. And the Supreme Court justices might want to think about that.”
