Health groups claim camel’s magazine campaign for menthol cigarettes target kids – consumerist
(Eva Deht)
Remember Joe Camel? That «cool» mascot proved troublesome for Camel cigarettes, as all tobacco companies all eventually were barred from targeting kids in their marketing campaign. And now Camel is in hot water (smoke?) again, as a number of health groups are claiming that its new ad campaign for Camel Crush menthol cigarettes is aimed at young people.
The American Heart Association, American Lung Association and several others are asking at least two state attorneys to look into the campaign, which ran in 24 magazines including popular titles like Sports Illustrated and People, reports the Associated Press.
The ads are pushing the Camel Crush brand, which uses a small capsule in the cigarettes that when smushed, releases menthol flavor.
According to the health groups, the ads could violate Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement which, in part, prohibits cigarette companies from trying to get kids to buy their products. And while print ads are totally legal here in the U.S., they’re banned from the radio, television and billboards.
Menthol cigarettes are already a target for opponents of the tobacco industry, as critics say kids are wooed by the flavor that masks the icky taste of tobacco smoke.

Camel Cigarettes (R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.) Camel Promotional Lighters
Camel cigarettes were introduced in 1913 by RJR. Over the years Camel has introduced MANY promotional cigarette lighters. For the most part, the Camel/Zippo lighters won’t be covered because they will have the Zippo dating system in use and dates can easily be determined through that. See Dating Zippo Lighters
Some of these lighters, such as the Slide Sleeve lighter, are of exceptionally good quality the Slede Sleeve, for example, is built like a Sherman tank and quire heavy much heavier than the original lighters it was modeled on.

It even had a red band on the filter to disguise lipstick stains! It was repositioned in the 1950s as a men’s cigarette. Many promotional lighters have been made using the Marlboro brand. This petrol and flint, brass lighter was a promotional giveaway with the purchase of cigarettes. c. 1991. This (and other No. 5 lighters) seems to be based on the nearly identical Orlik No. 5 lighter produced probably in the 1930s in Austria.

Winston/Salem Cigarettes (R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.)
The Salem brand was introduced by R. J. Reynolds in 1956 and was the first filter tipped menthol cigarette. The Winston brand was introduced by R. J. Reynolds in 1954 and was the number ONE brand from 1966 1972. Both the Winston and Salem brands names come from the city where R.J.R. was founded and headquartered Winston Salem, NC.
Winston Promotional Lighter
Winstons were introduced by RJR in 1954, so there aren’t any terribly old Winston branded lighters. Since they’re from RJR, as are Camels, many of the same lighters appeared as promotions for both brands.
