Police have determined who was driving the minivan that caused a fatal three vehicle collision in Bennettsville last weekend, but it will still be several weeks before the investigation is complete. LeVerne Pauling, 52, of 332 Morris Avenue, Bennettsville, died in the wreck that happened Saturday, May 3, at the intersection of Everett and East Main Streets around 4 15 p.m.

The general fund budget presented to members of the Marlboro County Board of Education during a workshop Monday totals just over $30 million and is balanced without a tax increase or use of fund balance, Chief Finance Officer Wes Park said.

The futures of Marlboro Park Hospital and Chesterfield General Hospital are uncertain following the announcement Tuesday that their operator, Chesterfield/Marlboro LP, will not renew its lease with the building owners next year. The lease expires April 30, 2015, according to a news release issued Tuesday morning. Marlboro County did not fare well in an annual report that ranks counties in terms of health outcomes and factors. The County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program, a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, takes a broad look at the health of individual communities.

Bennettsville Downtown Development Association (BDDA) reviewed the past year and presented two prestigious awards during its annual meeting Monday at Bennettsville Community Center. Ken Harmon, BDDA executive director, said BDDA has been in existence for 28 years. He also said that during the past year, Bennettsville has seen six new businesses open and the annual investment in the city has been $1,042,775.

COLUMBIA Marlboro County native Jennifer Ainsworth of Socastee, Horry County Schools’ Teacher of the Year, was named the South Carolina Teacher of the Year on Wednesday night, during a gala at Columbia Convention Center. Ainsworth, originally from McColl, was one of the top five finalists.

Smoldering rubble and a lone handicap ramp are virtually all that remain of a Marlboro County church that was damaged by fire on Easter Sunday. It happened around 10 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, located at 601 Mt. Zion Church Road near Tatum.

Typically, when a manufacturing plant hosts an open house, with tours of the facility, the purpose is to highlight some new equipment or a milestone in the company’s history. For such occasions, the invitation list is filled with local and state dignitaries, elected officials and business leaders. Baldor Electric in Clio is opening its doors to the community next Thursday, May 1, but with a much different target audience and mission.
