County Seat

Bennettsville was founded in 1819 as the county seat for Marlboro County, as citizens desired a more central location for their courthouse than the original site on the eastern bank of the Great Pee Dee River. A three acre apple orchard situated on a bluff above Crooked Creek on the Great Metropolitan Stage Line from New York to New Orleans was selected. A courthouse designed by Robert Mills was constructed and streets and a square were designed. Bennettsville was named after then Governer Thomas Bennett. After railroads reached Bennettsville during the 1880’s, the economy boomed bringing with it a notable collection of both antebellum and Victorian homes surrounding the courthouse square, many of which are now housing a variety of businesses. Check out the photo gallery for just a few. According to local lore, the farmland here was so rich and fertile, it was once sold by the pound, not the acre.

Marlboro is accepting applications for Fall 2014 admission!

If you are looking for an intentionally small, intellectually demanding liberal arts school where students are seen, heard, known, and valued, Marlboro College would be a great college choice for you.

Marlboro assesses student potiential in the unique context of each applicant’s experience, without the confines of GPAs or standardized test scores. There is no formula for what makes a student a «good fit» for Marlboro, but applicants are reviewed with an eye towards intellectual promise, self motivation, self discipline, and ability to positively contribute to our community.

Important Dates

Marlboro admits students through Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision plans. While we encourage students to submit applications by the priority deadline, the admissions office continues to accept applications on a rolling basis. Contact the admissions office if you have missed a deadline.

How to Apply

• Common Application Marlboro College exclusively uses the Common Application. Submit this online or in print by the appropriate deadline, above.
• Marlboro Supplement Complete the Marlboro supplement to the Common Application online or in print, including the Why Marlboro? supplemental essay. This is an opportunity to tell us who you are, how you think, what you value, and how your interest in Marlboro fits into your overall goals.
• Expository Writing Sample Provide us with an analytical writing sample. Writing samples can be uploaded to the Marlboro Supplement at the Common Application site or sent in the mail. This paper should have been written for an academic class, and should accurately reflect your current analytical writing skills. There is no length requirement.
• School Transcripts Give your Secondary School Report form to your high school counselor and ask that your transcripts be sent to Marlboro College. Transfer students must also provide a college transcript from each institution attended.
• Recommendation Forms Two recommendations are required. One recommendation form must be submitted by a teacher who knows you well. The second may be from another adult who you know well it may be a guidance counselor, teacher, coach, employer, etc.
• Application Fee Submit the $50 application fee via the Common Application website, by submitting a credit card number over the phone, or by sending a check in the mail. If you are unable to send the application fee, contact your admissions counselor regarding an application fee waiver request.
• Interview Interviewing is required only for transfer students. However, all applicants are encouraged to arrange for an interview with an admissions counselor or other community member. Interviews give you the opportunity to learn more about us, and help the admissions committee determine whether you are a good fit for Marlboro.
• Test Scores Test scores are optional for all applicants. If you feel that your SAT or ACT scores are representative of your overall academic ability and would like for them to be considered in your application review, you are welcome to submit them. The codes for Marlboro College are SAT 3509, ACT 4304.
