Exciting news this morning as Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro intends to put Michael Schumacher in Felipe Massa’s car untill the Brazilian driver will be able to race again.
The seven times world champion and most successful F1 driver of all time retired from the sport at the end of 2006. He has often tested for the team but hasn’t been in an F1 seat for fifteen months. Coupled with this is the ban on testing between races. This will mean that he won’t be able to drive the current Ferrari F60 on a race track until practice gets underway in Valencia, although he will be able to familiarise himself with the car in straight line tests.
Michael Schumacher said he is ready and, over the next few days, will undertake a specifc training program at the end of which confirmation will be given of his participation in the Championship with effect from the European Grand Prix on the 23rd of August.
The news of Schumacher’ s return brings an end to two days of frenzied speculation, in which first his spokeswoman indicated that he would “ consider” deputising for Massa if called upon by Ferrari and then his manager Willi Weber categorically denied that he would race in Valencia.
With Massa likely to be out of the series for the rest of the season and a resurgence in Ferrari’s form Schumachers return adds an exciting ingredient to the championship.
